Flights
Our nearest airport is Málaga - about one hours drive away
You can get a flight to Málaga from many parts of the world - for a full list of airlines and where they fly from see
Good value flights are easy to find with economy airlines off season, but harder as the high season and summer holidays approach. The following examples apply to British tourists, but the principles of searching for value travel apply to tourists of all nationalities. We suggest that you consult low fare agencies using searches such as Lowcostholidays or Opodo (for example) Calculate your fare and to book using this form, but always compare their prices to the actual price, consulting the actual airline. They may be adding a surcharge. Also see below before you finally commit.
During the high season and summer holidays, we recommend that you take a very broad view about where you can find cheap flights and in the summer, look to charter flights as well as the economy airlines such as Easyjet. Easy Jet is a great economy airline but is not always the cheapest option all year round. British clients might look a Monarch airlines on http://www.flymonarch.com/cnt/scheduled/offers/bargain.asp. British Airlines bargains are worth a look. Thompson holidays also have bargain charter flights – try http://www.leeds-uk.com/flights/thomson-flights.htm
When you use Monarch, Thompson, Easy Jet or others, consider leaving from less popular or provincial airport like Jerez or Granada and driving an hour or two to us. You might also consider a drive to and/or from a less popular airport in their country of departure. If you do use Easyjet or other economy airlines, also consider small airports that are not the most popular (In England, for example, airports other than Luton). In high season, you might profit from a mix and match – one bargain deal out and different one back.
August is the cruellest month for travel. Flights can be congested, uncomfortable and expensive. If you have to take a holiday in August because of school holidays or for other reasons, to get a good deal try to:
Book as early as you can
Consult charters and economy flights
Consider all viable airports at home and at your destination
Register with economy airlines such as EasyJet so that they will inform you by email when they are having a last minute sales or deals. These sometimes last only 24 hours and can be very cheap
We hope that this advice helps you to get a good travel deal. However the market is constantly changing and we can´t take rsponsibility for any choices you make based on this.
Car Hire
Car hire in Spain is still among the cheapest in Europe -but beware of "fuel theft"
Increasingly, car hire firms are operating a full/empty fuel policy, whereby first they overcharge you for a full tank of fuel, then they don't give you a refund for any fuel still in the tank when you return your car. We regard this as a scam, and advise you to avoid firms that practice it.
How to Get to Almáchar and Cútar from Málaga airport
Almáchar and Cútar lie in the hills north east of Málaga city - the drive takes about an hour
Airport routine If you have hired a car and you’re with others, it’s a good idea for one person to stand in the long queue for the car while the other/s wait for the luggage (you don’t have to go through customs when coming into Malaga Airport). Walk out towards the exit - just by the door is a right turn with a ramp leading underground. That’s where the “in airport” car hire firms are – the queues can sometimes be very long. If you’re collecting a car from an ‘off airport’ company go through arrivals and ‘phone your company. They will usually collect you from the bus pick up – turn right out of the “arrivals” door and it’s about 20 metres along the road.
To Almáchar
On leaving the car park, follow the airport approach road. After a small roundabout, move to the left hand lane. This will take you over a bridge and onto the main N340 eastbound dual carriageway – follow the signs towards MALAGA. After 2 kilometres, filter right for RONDA DE MALAGA, MOTRIL and ANTEQUERRA and join the E-15/N340. Continue along the motorway, following signs for RONDA de MALAGA, MOTRIL and ANTEQUERRA.
You will then see signs for ALMERIA. Follow the signs for ALMERIA and continue along the motorway in this direction until you see the exit sign for RICON de la VICTORIA, BENAGALBON AND ALMACHAR. Leave the motorway at this exit.
Do not take the road that goes back under the motorway to the left, but follow the slip road right and you will immediately come to some traffic lights. You need to take a left turn here, towards BENAGALBON.
Now you simply follow the road. The drive from here to Almachar takes about 30 mins, and you will pass the villages of Benagablon and Moclinejo to your right on the way.
You will climb steadily along a good but winding road. When you begin to descend you are on the last leg of your journey. Descend until you reach a roundabout. In the middle is a fountain with large bunch of grapes. Turn right up the hill and you come to the entrance of Almachar, another 50 metres gets you to the top car park. Phone us from here are we will come to meet you
To Cútar
From the car park, follow the airport approach road.
Follow the signs for ALMERIA and continue along the motorway in this direction until you see the exit sign for Vélez Málaga. (see map below). From Vélez take the Viñuela road due north until you get to the Benamargosa turn off which is about 1 km from the roundabout (there’s a very large bar on the corner called ‘El Cruce’) – it’s about 14Km from Vélez to Cútar.
Turn left here and continue through Triana to Benamargosa. When you get to the centre of Benamargosa turn left over the bridge and follow the road through the hills to Cutar.
The drive from Benamargosa to Cútar takes about 15mins. Watch out for the 5 kilometer sign - you’ll quickly see Cútar appear off to your right. Watch out then for the entrance to the village, a slip road to your right with a bus shelter and a stone and brick sign shaped a bit like a bishops hat. The village car park is at the bottom of the hill at the entrance to the village. We'll meet you there.
